Where do I start?

I have lived in the same town for years and have made no friends. I am shy and have no confidence. I tried to rekindled old friendships from the past but that didn't work out. my family is basicly nonexistant I'm so depressed and lonely for a friend. Im to the point of throwing in the towel I cant afford a therapist besides what really can they do maybe be my friend I doubt that. any suggestions?
